Chip'N'Dale's Rescue Rangers |
About The Series:
Broadcast Dates:
Chip'N'Dale's Rescue Rangers was first shown on cable T.V., on The Disney Channel. The first thirteen standalone episodes of the series were aired here before the show reached the networks and went into syndicated broadcast. This was probably a poor way to initially launch the series - the origin story that explained the existance of the Rescue Rangers as a team was skipped over in doing so.
The point at which the show became available to the widest audience, however, six months later was when it premiered in syndication with the five-part series "To The Rescue", which comprised the first five episodes of the series and were typically shown on the premiere date as one continuous "movie". "To The Rescue" established the origin story for the series and set the stage for all the episodes to come afterwards. Individual T.V. stations had some leeway in exactly when they aired these five episodes, but it was generally around September 15-17, 1989.
After this, the show continued to broadcast in syndication for a while, until it was taken off the air in favor of new shows in the Disney Afternoon lineup. Even after it went off regular broadcast T.V., however, it had an interestingly long lifespan on cable T.V. via Toon Disney. Sadly, at this point it has vanished even from that channel, and there is currently no broadcast venue at all for Chip'N'Dale's Rescue Rangers.
The Cast of Characters:
Main Characters:
| Chip: | The de facto leader of the Rescue Rangers, though never officially acknowledged as such. Always seen in an Indiana Jones style fedora and bomber jacket. He's the true hardcore detective of the group, and generally keeps all of them on-task with whatever their current case may be. |
| Dale: | Always wearing a red hawaiian shirt with yellow flowers, he's a general all-around goofball. His fascinations with comic books with horror movies, combined with a very active imagination, sometimes get on Chip's nerves. Despite the fights they get in, however, they always remain friends. |
| Gadget Hackwrench: | The team's inventor. Despite the blonde hair and good looks, she definately doesn't fall into the usual stereotypes associated with those things - rather, she's a genius capable of building anything out of scraps of junk. In accorance with her role as an inventor and mechanic, she's always wearing a bluish-lavendar jumpsuit and a pair of goggles are usually perched atop her head. |
| Monterey Jack: | The strongmouse of the group, and also the most traveled and experienced - so much so that he's always got a story to tell about some situation in the past that the current predicament reminds him of. Unfortunately for him, since this usually happens in the middle of a crisis, he rarely gets to finish his anecdotes. He wears a green sweater with a tan jacket over it, and an aviator's hat and glasses on his head. |
| Zipper: | Monterey Jack's longtime friend and traveling companion. As a housefly, he's the smallest of the rangers... But makes up for the size difference easily to be a valuable member of the team, through a combination of quickwittedness, courage, and being the only one of them with the ability to fly. He's usually seen wearing a red sweater. |
Recurring Villians:
| Fat Cat: | A powerful criminal mind in the animal world, Fat Cat runs a casino situated on top of a cat food factory. His constant schemes lead to his constant entanglement with the Rangers as they foil his plots. |
| Norton Nimnul: | The stereotypical "mad scientist" villian. He frequently threatens to alternately conquer, flatten, or simply rob the city blind with various inventions concocted to facilitate his criminal activities. In the end, however, the Rangers always manage to overcome his plans. |
One-shot Characters of importance to the fan community:
| Tammy: | A young squirrel, she and her baby sister were in the Ranger's care in the aptly-named episode "Adventures In Squirrelsitting". She developed a crush on Chip and despite being just a one-shot character, is often talked about / referred to in fan discussions. |
| Foxglove: | A bat familiar of Winnifred (a disgruntled cleaning lady studying to become a witch) in "Good Times, Bat Times" who was quite enamoured with Dale. Despite her brief airtime, she's a very heavily discussed character, and has a large fan following. |
